About

CONTEXTURE is the work of Nathan Lee.

I have taken a broad approach to traditional art and design disciplines, applying my formal training in Landscape Architecture to a career in Public Art and Industrial Design. My strength is my ability to problem solve; my expertise is to do so playfully. I recognize that sometimes finding the best solution requires reframing the problem. I delight in the fact that unique problems often require unique solutions and that small, integrated interventions can have as bold an impact as the largest sculptural element.

I believe that public art is a unique medium. It is rooted in place, and as a result is a reflection of its cultural and ecological context. Unlike gallery art, whose audience is self-selecting, public art is democratic and open to everyone. On one hand, it has the potential to playfully engage and visually enhance the public realm. On the other, it has the unique capacity to illuminate and challenge. Truly successful public art can do both. It can frame how we interpret place and history, while delighting us in the experience.
