By bringing together Nathan Lee’s writing and Marlene Yuen’s illustrations, this collaborative project explores a unique perspective on local Chinese Canadian History. It tells the story of the artifact that would become the inspiration for Hak Chu / Pak Chu, Nathan’s public art installation in Burnaby’s Deer Lake Park. The conversation between Lee and Yuen is that of two enthusiastic artists reaching into a shared history to form a bond with the past. Together, they bring a complex and heavy history to life. Through personal experience and understanding, both whimsical and speculative, the artists offer insight into how a modest and playful object could survive for so many years, and eventually reach a new audience as an artwork.
